How to inspect and remove supported HEIC metadata

Start with the HEIC file you mean to inspect

1. Obtain a local original export if the photo currently lives in a photo library or cloud service.
2. Choose Browse Files in MetaQuiet and select the HEIC or HEIF file.
3. Read the supported EXIF fields, including camera, dates and GPS when available. Check any incomplete-preview message.
4. Choose Create clean copy if the variant is supported. MetaQuiet checks the output before presenting it.
5. Save the copy or share it, then open the saved version in a compatible viewer to check its appearance and orientation.

A provider may supply an adjusted representation rather than the stored original. Inspection describes that selected representation. Using an original export helps when you need to understand what the HEIC file itself contains.

What supported HEIC cleaning removes

A supported HEIC photo can contain an EXIF item with camera details, capture dates and location. It can also contain supported XMP metadata. MetaQuiet handles those descriptive structures without decoding and recompressing the image.

The readable preview is not an exhaustive listing of every item in the container. A missing camera field or GPS value may mean the value was absent, changed by the provider or unavailable to the reader. Read the supported block report as well as the field list.

On Android, the photo picker can hide GPS before passing a photo to MetaQuiet. The app does not request media location access. Use Browse Files with an original export when checking location, and do not interpret a picker copy’s missing coordinates as proof about the original.

Orientation remains for correct display

HEIC can represent rotation and mirroring through its display properties, and EXIF can also contain orientation information. Supported cleaning preserves the technical information needed for the image to keep its intended orientation while removing descriptive EXIF.

A small orientation-only EXIF record can therefore remain in the output. Its presence does not by itself mean that camera, author or GPS fields survived. Color and other rendering information can remain too.

MetaQuiet does not convert the file to JPEG, resize the image or re-encode its picture data. Conversion is a separate task. If a recipient cannot open HEIC, metadata cleaning alone does not change that compatibility.

Still-image support does not cover every HEIF variant

The supported scope is still-image HEIC/HEIF with structures the adapter can validate. Sequence or movie structures are rejected, as are unsupported item layouts and ambiguous metadata arrangements. Do not assume that every file ending in .heic or .heif is accepted.

AVIF is unsupported even though it uses a related container family. Renaming an AVIF to HEIC does not convert it. HEIC files also have the general 25 MB limit, and malformed or unsupported structures can be rejected below that size.

A rejection is a reason to keep the original and review the stated limitation. It is not evidence that the photo is unusable in other apps, and MetaQuiet does not upload it elsewhere to try a different cleaner.

Review what you save

Open the exported photo and check rotation, mirroring and visible content. Faces, text and location clues in the picture remain. For a metadata check, select the saved output through Browse Files, since a photo library or receiving app may add fields during saving.

Save a lasting copy before clearing temporary storage in Settings > Storage. The original is never overwritten, so it can still carry its initial metadata. Make sure the file you send is the reviewed output.
